The path Ren and Ayni disappeared down led towards a small pine glade near a rugged cliff. Mar heard the faint clash of steel, a dragon’s roar, and then deafening silence. He hoped they were not heading into another skirmish. The group that attacked them in the village had been larger than Mar expected for a scouting party. He’d counted at least thirty attackers, which would have overwhelmed any normal group their size. However, they were no match for two dragons, a master swordsman and one very vicious witch.

Mar smiled, thinking about Ina’s fighting style. She was a flexible fighter and wielded both sword and magic without combat experience, making her simultaneously vulnerable and deadly. They would need to practise as soon as possible, but he was already impressed at how she’d held her ground when the whole horde attacked.

Remembering that moment, Mar frowned. What had caused the sudden change in tactics? Why did they all charge a mage who was wielding fire? They would need to find the answer to those questions.

A glance at Ina reassured him she was feeling better, and the captain wondered what more there was to her distress. Did my spitfire really think she was a monster? Ina had never struck him as a frail wallflower to mourn people who tried to kill her, yet she’d looked so anguished after the battle. Her sudden mood change after he’d comforted her baffled him and forced a laugh from his lips.

‘Why are you laughing?’ Ina looked at him suspiciously.

‘For no reason at all.’ His lips twitched harder when he noticed her eyes narrow, her suspicion deepening. But before Ina could interrogate him, he saw Ayni’s cloak and the light of a fire flicker between the trees. He took Ina’s hand and pulled her into the clearing.

Ren crouched next to a drow male, and Ayni held her dagger against a kobold’s throat. The rest of the attackers were scattered on the ground, dead from Ren’s merciless blade.

‘Did anyone escape?’ Mar asked, hoping for a negative answer. They could do without reinforcements catching them out in the open.

‘No, Ayni was very effective in preventing their escape.’ Ren’s compliment brought a beautiful smile to Ayni’s face, especially as he looked at her with appreciation. Ina frowned slightly, but it was short-lived, and Mar was grateful for this small mercy.

He approached the kobold. The warrior sat there with an unreadable expression, but when Mar came closer, the man clenched his fist and hit his chest, bowing deeply in front of him despite the press of Ayni’s dagger.

‘Marcach of Liath, we broke our oath. The tatters of my honour beg for death by your hand.’

‘Cave scum, you can die with your oaths and worthless customs,’ the drow spat out, but Ren’s fist in the face quickly silenced him.

‘How do you know me?’ asked Mar, surprised by this sudden recognition.

‘I was there when you defeated our chieftain. I was a witness to the oath.’

Mar’s eyes clouded as he recalled that fateful day when he became the unwilling hero, which led to his unhappy marriage.
